Please vote for us!

I have just pledged our cats’ love for Whiskas® in Australia and entered a competition for a chance to win $10,000. We were only able to enter 2 cats into the competition, so Keiko and Kenji have active profiles on the website.

If we win the competition, our cat’s face would also be featured on a limited-time Oh So… pack!

I am a huge RSPCA supporter and would love a chance to donate back to this fabulous organisation that helped to bring Keiko, Kenji and Pricilla into my life. It breaks my heart to see so many animals still waiting for their forever homes, and to see so many healthy animals put to sleep for lack of available resources.

Having these cats in our family have totally changed mine and my husband’s life. I’m no longer afraid to spend weeks alone while my husband goes away for work, and love to have these furry companions to snuggle up to when my CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) has got me in a downward spiral.

We would also be using the money towards the cost of moving the cats to Malaysia this year (vet costs including immunisation, flights, hotel costs etc.). We want to ensure the smoothest, most comfortable option for our beautiful kitties.

We are hoping our friends could support us and vote for us daily if possible!

Please vote for Keiko & Kenji on the Whiskas website!

Kenji bit me - video

Need I say more? This is the treatment I get every night. He gets wild-eyed and sometimes hits my face or grabs my head! This is very very mild compared with some of the stuff he’s done! I love it! haha

Vet rant

keiko-blogKenji-blog pri-blog

Our 3 cats went to the vet the other day to get wormed, and Pricilla had her eye looked at as we suspected she had conjunctivitis. Poor little things!

We got the same guy (vet) as the last time Keiko received her yearly check-up and vaccination. I knew there was something I didn’t like about him!

He looked at Pricilla’s eye and we established that she has conjunctivitis and that she needs eye medication. That was settled (even though I don’t like the type of medication we’ve been given, but that’s minor).

--BUT--

When we started talking about the worming tablet, he said he would use this metal tweezer-like implement to shove it down Pricilla’s throat as he didn’t want to be bitten.

WHAT!?!?!?!

I was thinking, “That’s exactly why we brought them? Because you’re supposed to know what you’re doing? What kind of vet are you?”

Anyway, we went along with it and watched in horror as he held down Pricilla’s head and tried to give her the worming tablet. She struggled, of course. After the third time, much to our horror, the tablet was smeared with blood. He had actually drawn blood from inside poor Pricilla’s mouth.

Graeme managed to say, “That doesn’t look right.. can we try another way?”

I’m ranting because every other time we’ve been to the vet for worming, they have used either their hand or a plastic tablet inserter thing. Not metal tweezers, or tongs, or whatever they are!! I was angry. I was wondering where the other vet was, who last time gave Kenji his worming tablet with such finesse, no dramas.

So this awful man (vet) got us onto Profender, administered to the back of the neck. He said although more expensive, it may be a better option because our cats don’t like tablets. (I was thinking, well, we’ve never had that much trouble before, it was probably the metal implement shoved in her mouth, but ok.) We decided this might actually be a good option as the girls hate receiving medication anyway.

So today, I gave them all Profender at home. Keep in mind that our cats don’t even get flea treatment because they’re indoor cats and get showered once a fortnight, and plus they all really like to keep clean.

What a disaster! The cats have spent the entire day trying in vain to lick the medication, which they can’t reach because it’s on the back of the neck – but then they managed to scratch it and lick their foot.

Poor Keiko and Pricilla have already vomited.

If that awful man (vet) had given them the tablet as we asked, without trying to take their eye out in the process, they wouldn’t be feeling so sick.

Grrrrr.

AND last time Keiko was there, we asked if it’s bad if she drinks milk then has diarrhoea or vomits (duh) – we actually try to get them cat milk – but the awful man (vet) actually said that some cats are lactose intolerant, but it’s not a big deal because his own cat loves milk and just gets diarrhoea all the time.

What kind of a vet is he? I think he needs to go back to university.

GRRRR.

How dare he harm our little darlings?

Dear Dogs and Cats

I received this from my mother-in-law! For all you dog & cat lovers :)

The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door..

Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort, however.. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:

****TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:
(1) They live here. You don't.
(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes,     stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
(1) eat less,
(2) don't ask for money all the time,
(3) are easier to train,
(4) normally come when called,
(5) never ask to drive the car,
(6) don't smoke or drink,
(7) don't want to wear your clothes,
(8) don't have to buy the latest fashions,
(9) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and
(10) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children ....

Traumatic & gross … but a bit funny

I love my Kenji, especially in the mornings. He’s so affectionate and loves to cuddle up to me and rub his face on mine. But sometimes, that’s not a good thing. What happened is actually 250% my fault but I couldn’t look at Kenji for a little while! It’s a bit of a long (and really stupid) story…

P1120657n

I’ve planted lots of radishes in my vege patch. They’re really easy to grow, yummy, healthy, etc. Last time I harvested, I left one for fun to see what would happen and how big it would grow. Pointless fun, hehe!

A couple of days ago, I decided to pull it out, because the leaves were being eaten by green caterpillars.

I don’t like caterpillars (eww) and when I see them on my veggies I usually use chopsticks to take them off and throw them onto a different part of the garden so that it can serve the eco system (ie. birds can find them).

There was a medium-sized (big enough) caterpillar on this big radish but I didn’t realise until I had brought it inside. By the time I saw it, I was so grossed out I decided to leave him on there and hope that my husband would get rid of him (how sneaky of me). I watched it throughout the day in horrified fascination.

That night, I observed the caterpillar eating away the radish leaf and its little body was pulsating with its green (?) blood. So disgusting, but I wasn’t going to kill it!

When I couldn’t see the caterpillar on the radish the next morning, I was quite worried. I wondered how far a caterpillar could walk in 8 hours… I looked around the room to no avail. So I carefully walked over to my laptop and decided not to think about it.

After about 10 minutes I looked down and there it was! Just next to the chair I was sitting on, on the floor, healthy and on the move. By this time I was thinking I really should just put him outside before I stepped on him, because, that would just be too traumatic.

I should have…

Because the next thing, I got engrossed in all the cat blogs that I love to read, and forgot all about it. By the time I remembered, it was too late. I should have realised that the cats were already up and roaming the house – I saw the awful green mess of what used to be the caterpillar smeared on the floor (not near me, but only where a cat had been that day).

It was so bad! Graeme had already left for work (he was actually oblivious to my stupidity) so I had to clean it all up myself. It was my fault anyway, but how traumatic!

I didn’t know which cat it was, but I went over to Kenji to comfort myself … he was purry and affectionate so I picked him up.

Then I saw them…

GREEN PAWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just about dropped him! GROSS!!!!!!!

Awful awful awful!

I plucked up the courage and told my husband today, and he could not stop laughing at me.

How to take a photo of Pricilla, and her story

I have a bit of a problem taking a photo of Pricilla because:

1) She’s so dark it’s hard to see her facial features

2) She doesn’t even like the camera so she usually looks away

3) I obviously can’t use flash, because that’ll just scare her even more

4) I’m not a photographer so I guess I have no idea what I’m doing – that’s the biggest problem! (haha)

So far, most of the photos I’ve taken haven’t come up very well. I love this photo but she kind of blends in to the couch…

What do people with dark-faced-cats do? Wah! Help!

So Pricilla’s story. I never got to share the story of how she came to be our little girl, even though it’s described briefly on her profile page.

I make it a habit to look up the RSPCA site (almost) every day, and one day in November ‘09, I saw this pretty little thing who was 12 years old. My husband was away at the time, and I just could not resist ringing the RSPCA to ask about her, whether she would be ok with our 2-3 yr old Keiko & Kenji, was our place big enough, etc.

A couple of weeks before this, I was told of a dog – who was adopted by a family member years ago – boisterous and uncontrollable. After trying really hard to train him (he was a large dog), the owner took the dog back to the RSPCA. That night, they changed their mind and wanted to give the dog another chance so went back the NEXT MORNING to get him back, but he had already been put down. What a sad story. I was heartbroken when I heard about it.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this poor dog and the poor owner when I saw Pricilla. First of all, I wondered why she had been given up at such an advanced age, and I really felt that this 12 year old precious girl deserved a nice home. I definitely didn’t want to think about what would happen if we didn’t adopt her, or if nobody adopted her…

So before I even asked my husband, I made an appointment with the RSPCA officer to meet Pricilla on the day my husband would be back, 4 days later. I prayed and prayed that she would be there, but if not, I hoped she would go to a nice home.

And the rest is history! I often wonder if she’s happy to be with us and whether her new home is to her liking, her Royal Highness… (!!)

This is the photo of Pricilla that was on the RSPCA site when I found her for the first time:

and this is Pricilla today (5 months on)

P1120313n

I think… she looks AWESOME (if I may say so myself)!!!!!!! When we first brought her home, for weeks she hissed a lot and scractched the bejeesus out of my hand – I guess she was very anxious – but now she is the sweetest companion who likes to snuggle up to her mummy and daddy. I pat her every day telling her please live til 30! :-)

I’m constantly worried about our move to Malaysia but we’ve found a good company that specialises in moving pets globally – I’m sure they will give her the proper care she needs to fly over.

Paws & fingers crossed!

I can’t wait to meet him!

My cats insisted…

Tonight I’ve been busy setting up a blog for Keiko, Kenji & Pricilla. They insisted that they want to be like other kitties who have their own blogs…

So here it is… Kitty Trio is launched!

Keiko wants to write over there and she’s going to post her little purrs and meows. I’m pretty obsessed with cats so Milky Way will continue to run in the same vein, and I can spend a little more time writing non-cat things too. Hope you can visit and support my cats with their blog!

The cats are so happy now and purring loudly.

Here’s a happy snap for the occasion (blurry as usual as Keiko wriggles so much!)

Why the long face?

I found Keiko looking pretty sad just then… I don’t know what it’s about! All my attempts to get her face to light up failed?! Poor Keiko.
